The UAE is marking Wednesday its 49th National Day “Al Yawm Al Watani”, which is celebrated annually on December 2.

The day commemorates UAE’s formal nationalization and the start of the federal unification of the emirates in 1971, when the six small Gulf kingdoms of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah, and Umm Al-Quwain joined together to form one federation. A seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, was integrated into the union early the following year, completing the formation of the nation known today.

This occasion marks a sincere reflection of the federation's journey rich in monumental events and achievements, building on the foundation that was first laid down by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers, the fellow founding fathers.

“Spirit of the Union” is the official theme of the UAE’s National Day celebrations, which is inspired by the vision and leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed.

UAE marks this special occasion through grand celebrations held across the country. Fireworks, car rallies, and dance shows are the most common activities.

Furthermore, the “Seeds of the Union” show is set to take place in Abu Dhabi and broadcast live on a number of television channels on Wednesday at 6.15 PM (UAE time) – 5:15 PM (Cairo time).

The 40-minute show will highlight the UAE’s journey, as well as its values, sense of unity, and resilience.

UAE's National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority called people to adhere to precautionary and preventative health and safety measures against coronavirus during national activities and celebrations, including the 49th National Day.

Also, Google joined in the celebrations with a special Google Doodle. People using the search engine in the UAE on Wednesday can see the search engine's logo colored in red and white, flanked by an animated waving UAE flag.

The doodle honors the United Arab Emirates’ National Day in commemoration of the date in 1971.

On Tuesday, the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan stated that December 2nd, for the emirates, people and leadership, is a day to deepen the love of the nation and strengthen the existing communication between the people and its leadership.

In his speech marking the UAE’s 49th National Day, published in the Nation Shield magazine, he added: "A day in which we recall with gratitude the life of the founders of the state, who laid the foundations of a state that we are proud of belonging to and defend its existence, and the union will remain the soul of our state, the source of our inspiration, and the symbol of our cohesion,".

Sheikh Khalifa added that creating the future requires a clear vision, early anticipation of opportunities and challenges, and courage in making decisions that strengthen the country's readiness.
