Google and Apple have sharply criticized the European Union’s and France’s digital regulations, claiming they are stifling artificial intelligence innovation and restricting market competition.

Google’s Senior Vice President for Global Affairs, Kent Walker, announced the rollout of a new feature called AI Mode for the company’s search engine in Europe.

However, he revealed that France will be excluded from the launch due to regulatory concerns, according to the French newspaper Le Monde. Walker stated that France risks being left behind with outdated AI services, which he argued is not in the interest of its citizens or businesses.

The new AI Mode allows users to search interactively through a conversation-style interface similar to Gemini or ChatGPT, generating structured answers accompanied by links to reliable sources.

Despite its release across much of Europe, Google has decided not to activate the feature in France amid uncertainty surrounding the enforcement of competition laws.

Similar legal ambiguity previously delayed the launch of Google’s AI Overviews feature, which provides generative responses within search results.

Apple and Meta have joined Google in voicing frustration with Europe’s strict digital frameworks, including the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA).

These firms argue that such legislation is increasingly slowing innovation and blocking the introduction of emerging technologies across the continent.
