The coronavirus pandemic has hit the entertainment industry hard, which includes the Golden Globes.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC announced on Monday that the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards, which honors the best in film and television, will take place on February 28, 2021, a little later than usual, as it usually takes place early January.
The awards show will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, as previously announced.
The Golden Globes will air live at 8 PM ET (8:00 AM Cairo local time) on NBC.
Golden Globe awards new date
The decision of Golden Globes, which kicks off Hollywood’s awards season, follows the postponement by two months of the 93rd Academy Awards and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAS).
The new date had been the original date for the Oscars, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last week that the 93rd Oscars will no longer take place as planned, and instead will take place on April 25, 2021, which was followed by other pillars of Hollywood's awards season changing its dates.
In addition to the delay, the Academy extended the eligibility window for films, which usually corresponds to the calendar year. For the 2021 Oscars, the new window will be extended until February 28, 2021.
Submission deadlines have also been shifted back as well as the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has pushed back to April 30, 2021, instead of December 14, 2020.
The last time the Oscars were postponed was in 1981 when the ceremony was delayed for 24 hours following the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
Since then, dozens of films and televisions production has been delayed or had to be reimagined, from film releases to film festivals.
Tribeca Enterprises and YouTube teamed up for a ten-day virtual film festival called We Are One: A Global Film Festival late last month.
Some highly anticipated summer movies such as “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Black Widow” have shifted their releases to the fall.
Moreover, the BAFTAS, which are traditionally held two weeks before the Academy Awards, is now slated for April 11, 2021.
It is worth mentioning that the novel coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China, and has infected more than one million people and killed over 234,139 worldwide. It also hit several celebrities and top political figures around the world.
The virus is a new member of the Coronaviruses group, which was never identified in humans. The viruses’ family also includes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV), which cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Humans and animals such as mammals and birds can be affected by the disease. The name coronavirus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning “crown” or “halo”.
On February 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the official name for the disease caused by the new coronavirus is Covid-19, taken from the words “corona”, “virus” and “disease”.
In December 2019, an outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China. On 31 December 2019, the outbreak was traced to a novel strain of coronavirus, which was given the interim name 2019-nCoV by the World Health Organization (WHO), it was later renamed SARS-CoV-2 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.
On March 11, WHO declared the virus a global pandemic as the new virus has rapidly spread to more than 800,000 people from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.
Transmission of viruses between humans happens when someone comes into contact with an infected person’s secretions, such as droplets in a cough.
Coronavirus can also be transmitted by coming into contact with something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
It is known that older people appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of the emerging virus.
The virus caused complete paralysis in all activities and events with large gatherings worldwide due to concerns over the spread of the virus.
The pandemic also shut down the production of many TV shows, movies, music concerts, film, and music festivals, around the globe.
People across the globe partake in self-isolation for 14 days as an effective precautionary measure to protect those around them and themselves from contracting COVID-19.
