The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has revealed a staggering rise in global refugee numbers, surpassing 122 million in 2024, compared to 117.4 million in 2023.

The latest data underscores the increasing scale of forced displacement worldwide, fueled by conflicts in multiple regions.

Peter Ronstroth-Bauer, the UNHCR’s national director in Germany, described the figures as "shocking" during a statement in Bonn.

He emphasized the human stories behind the statistics, stating, "Behind every number is a person yearning for safety and a brighter future. It is our collective duty to provide protection and opportunities for these individuals."

The report highlights that much of this year's increase stems from recent escalations in conflict zones. In particular, the war in Gaza and Lebanon alone has displaced over 1.7 million people, contributing significantly to the growing global crisis.

With the refugee count reaching record highs, the report calls for urgent international action to address the underlying causes of displacement and to ensure adequate support for those affected.
