Global Finance magazine selected Tarek Amer, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) among the top 20 central bank governors for the second year in a row.

The magazine stated - in a statement on Wednesday - that the selection of Amer on the list came in light of the performance evaluation report issued annually by the magazine, which included more than 94 central bank governors around the world.

The governor of the CBE is expected to be honored on the sidelines of the upcoming annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, among the top 20 list of governors who have been selected, including ones from Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria , Chile, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, South Korea, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Hondraus, Iceland, Paraguay, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States.

The evaluation process included several strict criteria, including efforts to maintain currency stability, containing inflation, as well as interest rate management, and resilience to crises.

On his part, Joseph D. Giarraputo, Director General of Global Finance magazine said that central banks faced difficult circumstances and great challenges due to the corona pandemic this year.

Amer managed at the beginning of the outbreak to protect the central bank from unpredictable shocks, through wise policies and initiatives that contributed to mitigating the negative repercussions of the pandemic that struck the world.

These decisions had a significant impact on preserving employment and operating factories.  Moreover, his monetary policies also succeeded in maintaining low inflation rates, as well as stabilizing the exchange market.

It is noteworthy that Amer was chosen last year on the same list as one of the 20 best central bank governors in the world, and last year he received the annual African Banker Award as the best central banker in the continent for the year 2019.
