A major fire near Glasgow Central Station forced the closure of Scotland’s busiest railway hub on Monday, triggering widespread travel disruption and the cancellation of dozens of train services.

According to National Rail, significant disruptions were expected to continue throughout the day as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Rail operator ScotRail confirmed that Glasgow Central Station remained closed following a large blaze at a shop located on Union Street next to the station.

The fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a four-story Victorian commercial building and burned overnight, eventually causing part of the structure to collapse.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were alerted to the incident at 3:46 p.m. local time. At the height of the response, nine fire engines and specialized units were deployed to contain the blaze.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties had been reported.

The business affected, Sexy Coffee, said its premises were destroyed in what it described as a major fire.

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney expressed concern over the incident and thanked emergency responders for their efforts.

Scottish Parliament member Paul Sweeney said the damaged building had stood for more than 175 years, describing its destruction within hours as devastating.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire as rail services remain severely disrupted.
