English Filmmaker Ridley Scott shared an update on the highly-anticipated sequel to his 2000 historic epic movie "Gladiator".

In 2018, it was announced that Scott was planning to direct a follow-up to the war movie.

The movie is described by producers as a “legitimate” follow-up. The sequel is expected to focus on Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus, played by Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix in the original.

The 2000 movie centered on Commodus (Phoenix) taking over power and demoting Maximus (Russell Crowe), one of the preferred generals of his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who is then relegated to fighting till death as a gladiator.

“I am already having [the next] Gladiator written now, so when I have done 'Napoleon', 'Gladiator' will be ready to go.” Scott told Empire.

Scott is currently working on a movie about Napoleon Bonaparte, who is played by Phoenix.

The movie will also feature Jodie Comer, who stars in Scott’s new movie "The Last Duel".

Later this year, Scott will also release "House of Gucci", starring Al Pacino, Lady Gaga, and Adam Driver.

The script for "Gladiator 2" is reportedly being written by Peter Craig.

Speculation surrounding a sequel has been rose ever since the movie was released. It was a critical and commercial hit, earning $460m globally and earning five Oscars.
