An eight-year-old girl died on Wednesday in the custody of the US Border Patrol in Harlingen, Texas, as authorities reported a decrease in illegal crossings of the country's southern border since new policies were introduced last week.
"The child and her family were being held at Harlingen Station, where she faced a medical emergency," US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement.
The emergency medical devices were called to the station and the child was taken to the local hospital, where she was declared dead, the statement added.
