Get to Know Egypt's Presidency Spokespersons in Last 8 Years

The Egyptian presidency spokesperson is the only official media representative for the president, a position that was created for the first time in 2004.

Since then, this position has become the only media mirror of the president. The spokesperson interacts with presidential editors, provide them with all presidency-related news, statements and media materials. His main job is to present the president to the media outlets. He usually speaks to TV channels to manifest facts and provide further details if necessary.

Bassam Rady

The incumbent spokesperson, Bassam Rady, presents a new interpretation of the presidency spokesperson’s job description. He usually replies to questions posted by social media users.

In October, 2017, Rady was appointed to be the presidency spokesperson. His first appearance was in France during President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s first official visit to Paris.

It’s widely known among reporters accredited by the presidency’s media office that Rady is humble and cooperative.

His full name is Bassam Essam Rady. He is married and has only one son. He as graduated at a Bachelor of Computer Science and Nuclear Physics, Ain Shams University, 1990. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in November 1991. He is fluent in English, Italian and French.

He worked as a Deputy Ambassador to Japan, a Consul-General of Egypt in Istanbul and took up posts in the Egyptian embassies in the UAE and Italy.

Alaa Youssef

Youssef took up the office in September 2014, while Sisi was taking part in the United Nations General Assembly’s sessions in New York. His first official statement was released on Sept. 21, 2014, announcing the arrival of the president to New York.

His full name is Alaa Youssef Zakaria. He joined the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991, and worked in the office of the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, then moved to work in the delegation of the Arab Republic of Egypt at the United Nations in Geneva, where he was responsible for economic files.

He is currently Egypt’s ambassador to France. He worked in many embassies in Paris and Lebanon. He is fluent in French, English and Spanish.

Ehab Badawy

Badawy now is the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Minister's Cabinet Affairs. He was Egypt’s ambassador in Paris. On August 18. 2013, he held the position of spokesman for the Presidency upon a decree issued by then-President Adly Mansour.

Badawy was graduated from the University of Maryland in the United States of America, and worked as a diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1991. He worked in the Egyptian embassy in Paris, and was a media advisor there, and Egypt's permanent delegation in Geneva.

He also held the position of the Egyptian media advisor in Paris, then director of the Cairo Center for Training in Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa.

He played a role in clarifying the facts of what happened in the June 30 revolution, when the Presidency Institution sought help from him while he was the Director of the Information Office of Foreign Affairs in France, to manage the international press conference held by the Presidency to correct the facts of what was happening in Egypt.

Badawy was the third ambassador to hold this position after the January 25 revolution, and the fifth since the position was created in 2004.

Before 2004, duties of the presidency spokesperson position were performed by former Information Minister Safwat El Sherif who was the official spokesman for the Egyptian presidency and cabinet.
