Germany is facing hazardous weather conditions as heavy snowfall and ice threaten to severely disrupt traffic across large parts of the country, according to the German Weather Service.
The weather authority said fresh snowfall of up to 25 centimeters is expected in some areas, accompanied by icy conditions. Snowfall is forecast to spread northwards from the Alpine region in a broad band from Sunday afternoon through Monday.
Meteorologist Markus Übel warned that significant traffic disruption should be expected during the Monday morning rush hour due to snow covered roads. He said delays and problems are likely on both roads and rail networks.
Forecasts indicate snowfall of between 5 and 10 centimeters in many areas, with accumulations reaching up to 15 centimeters within just 12 hours in some locations. The highest totals are expected in a corridor stretching from eastern Baden-Württemberg to western and northern Franconia, where snow depths could reach between 15 and 25 centimeters.
In eastern Germany, particularly from the Ore Mountains through Brandenburg and Berlin to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, authorities urged caution over dangerous ice forming on roads and pavements from Sunday evening. Freezing rain is also expected in Saxony, although conditions are forecast to improve during the second half of the night into Monday.
The weather service also expects light to moderate snowfall to continue during daylight hours on Monday. Übel said that parts of northern Germany could see heavier snowfall at times, keeping roads icy, while freezing rain in the north east may initially turn into ice before adding several centimeters of fresh snow.
