Germany has called on Israel to facilitate the entry of more humanitarian aid into northern Gaza, where a lack of supplies has created a "desperate and intolerable" situation, according to a spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry on Monday.
During a regular press briefing in Berlin, the spokesperson stated, “We urge the Israeli government to urgently fulfil its responsibilities under international law.”
They further noted that “Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas within the framework of the law.”
This appeal comes as Israel has officially informed the United Nations of its decision to cancel the agreement that has governed its relationship with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) since 1967.
In October, Israel enacted a law prohibiting UNRWA from operating within its borders, effectively restricting cooperation with the agency that provides essential aid and educational services to millions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
UNRWA has warned that Israel's ban on its activities could lead to a "collapse" of humanitarian efforts in war-torn Gaza, exacerbating the dire situation faced by its residents.
