Germany is set to deliver an additional €3 billion ($3.3 billion) in military aid to Ukraine, according to a draft document from the German Finance Ministry.

Finance Minister Jörg Kukies informed the parliamentary budget committee about the decision, which comes amid ongoing discussions about Germany’s role in supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.

This marks a breakthrough after previous delays by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had blocked additional aid while insisting on easing borrowing rules as a prerequisite.

The German parliament voted on Tuesday to implement a major reform of financial regulations, paving the way for the aid package.

Since the start of the war in February 2022, Germany has become one of Ukraine’s key military supporters, providing advanced weaponry, including Leopard 2 tanks, IRIS-T air defense systems, and artillery.

However, Berlin has faced criticism, both domestically and internationally, for being slow in delivering crucial aid compared to other Western allies like the United States and the United Kingdom.

The latest financial commitment comes as Ukraine continues to request more military assistance, particularly in air defense and ammunition, to counter intensified Russian offensives.

With Germany’s new aid package, total German military support for Ukraine is expected to exceed €10 billion by the end of the year.
