Germany is set to allocate an additional €300 million to help supply Ukraine with around 50,000 long-range artillery shells, as the cost of ammunition continues to surge amid the prolonged conflict.

According to security sources cited by Russian media, the price of a single 155mm artillery shell purchased for Ukraine has risen to approximately €6,000, compared with around €2,000 at the start of the war in 2022.

The increase comes as Western-backed efforts to secure ammunition for Kyiv intensify. Under a Czech-led initiative launched in 2024, about 20 countries joined a program to procure artillery shells from third countries using Western funding.

Ukraine reportedly received 1.5 million large-caliber rounds in 2024 and is expected to receive about 1.8 million shells in 2025.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently confirmed Berlin's plans to expand support through the initiative, underscoring Europe's continued military assistance to Ukraine as the war enters another year.
