Germany has announced plans to send a contingent of its soldiers to Poland to assist in strengthening the country’s eastern border.
Poland, one of Ukraine’s strongest European supporters amid the ongoing war, revealed plans in May to reinforce a long stretch of its frontier, including sections bordering Belarus.
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense said the primary task of the German troops stationed in Poland will focus on engineering operations. These activities are expected to include constructing fortifications, digging trenches, laying barbed wire, and installing anti-tank barriers.
The spokesperson emphasized that Germany’s contribution to the operation will be limited strictly to these engineering duties.
No exact number of troops was disclosed, though the spokesperson described the deployment as involving a mid-sized, double-digit figure.
The German forces are expected to take part in the border fortification project from the second quarter of 2026 through the end of 2027.
