Thousands protested on Sunday in southern Germany on the weekend against the restrictions imposed to curb the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The police said that other thousands went out in counter-demonstrations to show their support for the government's measures to contain the pandemic.

The local authorities imposed restrictions, including observing social distancing to avoid an increase in the number of infections.

The police recorded between 10,500 and 11,000 in various demonstrations that began on Saturday and continued on Sunday.

A police spokesman said that the sunny weather might attract more participants.

The demonstrations attracted different groups of protesters, like civil rights defenders, anti-vaccinators, neo-Nazis, and members of far-right groups.

So far, Germany managed the pandemic crisis well, keeping infection and death rates low compared to other European countries in the outbreak of the first wave.

Yet, injuries started to increase again, and the authorities considered imposing more restrictions that may limit social life and hinder the recovery of the deteriorating economy that Germany witnessed in the first half of the year.
