Germany has successfully defused a World War II-era bomb found in Hamburg, triggering the evacuation of thousands of residents.
The bomb was discovered during construction work at a primary school in the Sternschanze district of the city.
According to the German news agency, local officials ordered the evacuation of thousands of people late last night following the discovery.
The Hamburg Fire Department confirmed that the device, believed to be a relic from the war, was safely neutralized without any incidents.
Police in Hamburg reported early this morning that emergency measures were being gradually lifted as the area returned to normal.
Such discoveries are not uncommon in Germany, where unexploded ordnance from World War II is frequently found, especially in areas that underwent heavy bombing during the conflict.
Most of these bombs are safely defused by bomb disposal experts, though occasional disruptions do occur.
