Germany's authorities announced today, Saturday, that the country entered a new stage of comprehensive lockdown with includes curfew at the national level after adopting a new controversial law.

Chancellor Angel Merkel considers that law as necessary to confront the third wave of the Coronavirus (known also as COVID-19).

On the other hand, a large number of European countries such as France, Italy Belgium, and Switzerland have decided to ease the restrictions linked to threats of COVID-19.

Germany, which is depicted as the engine of the European economy, moves in a contradictory way by embracing hardliner measurements introduced in the amended law of Protection of Contagious Diseases.

Swiss Info, a Swiss news website, has quoted the German Chancellor, as saying over her weekly statement that the comprehensive lockdown is a new mechanism in the battle against the pandemic and the country needs it urgently.

She added if we can reduce the cases of infections in a clear and speedy manner, then we can ease the restrictions gradually within the near future.

The German parliament (The Bundestag) passed this week a bill that imposes stricter measurements due to COVID-19 until June 30.

It is expected that the automatic imposition of restrictive measures at the national level in Germany will put an end to the tension between the regions and the federal government.

Some governments of states have modified and even ignored the strict measures, although it was decided to implement them with the approval of the district administrations.

For the federal government, it is very important to control the epidemic.

The disease has killed more than 841,000 people in Germany within a year, and the third epidemic wave, which witnessed the rapid spread of mutated versions of the virus, has not yet reached its peak, according to infectious disease specialists.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn said that the matter is related to "breaking the third wave of the virus."
