Germany has rejected calls from US President Donald Trump to provide military support in the war against Iran, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius dismissing concerns that such a stance could weaken NATO.
Speaking in Berlin on Monday, Pistorius questioned what additional role European naval forces could realistically play in the conflict.
He asked what Trump expected one or two European frigates to achieve in the Strait of Hormuz that the powerful US fleet has not already been able to accomplish.
Pistorius stressed that the conflict is not Germany’s war and that Berlin did not initiate it.
Responding to Trump’s warning that NATO could face a very bad future if allies fail to support Washington, the German defense minister said he does not believe the alliance would collapse because of such disagreements.
The comments highlight growing divisions among Western allies over military involvement in the escalating conflict with Iran.
