Clashes Between German Police, Environmentalists Left 79 Injuries

German police announced that more than 70 policemen were injured in clashes with demonstrators in the village of Luzerat, who were protesting against the resumption of coal mining in the region in light of the energy crisis resulting from the sanctions against Russia.

And the police announced in a statement, "Since the beginning of the operation, more than 70 policemen have been injured," and nine activists, whose injuries were not serious, were taken to hospital by ambulance.

The German police confirmed that, so far, they had managed to expel more than 300 people from Luzerat, and two activists remained refusing to leave one of the underground tunnels. While the police arrested 12 people.

The German Police have begun evacuating Luzerat, in North Rhine-Westphalia State , where German energy company RWE plans to start mining coal. The village was supposed to be completely depopulated by the end of January by legal decree.

As a result of the violent confrontations, many police cars were damaged, as stones were thrown at them, wing mirrors were ripped out, and a large number of their tires were damaged.
