Germany has failed to win a seat on the United Nations Security Council after losing in the first round of voting to Portugal and Austria.
President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock announced that Germany received only 104 votes, well short of the 127 votes required to secure the necessary two-thirds majority.
Portugal won 134 votes, while Austria secured 131, earning the available seats.
Germany has previously served on the Security Council six times, most recently in 2019–2020, and diplomats noted that Berlin had never before failed to secure election when standing as a candidate.
Analysts said Germany entered the race later than its rivals and faced criticism over its positions on the Gaza conflict, Israel’s actions against Iran, and US policy toward Venezuela, factors that may have weakened support for its candidacy.
