Germany Faces Rising Heatwave Threat

Germany is experiencing increasingly intense and frequent heatwaves, with climate experts warning that extreme temperatures are becoming a growing feature of the country's weather patterns.

Data from the German Weather Service show a steady rise in the number of "hot days" — defined as days when temperatures exceed 30°C. Environmental authorities say the long-term trend points to a continued increase in extreme heat events.

While more than 10 hot days per year was once considered unusual, recent years have seen significantly higher totals. Germany recorded more than 20 such days in 2018, around 17 in both 2019 and 2022, and roughly 11 days in 2020 and 2025.

According to climate researcher Peter Hoffmann, the latest heatwave has been driven by warm air masses moving from southwestern Europe.

He noted that these air currents are now considerably hotter than they were in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, allowing even the first weeks of summer to develop into significant heatwaves.

Scientists increasingly link the trend to climate change, warning that Germany could face more frequent and severe periods of extreme heat in the years ahead.
