Germany is seeking to deepen defense ties with Canada through a submarine agreement potentially worth €100 billion, in what could become the largest naval procurement deal in the history of both countries.
Berlin hopes progress on the project can be announced alongside the NATO summit, viewing the agreement as a long-term strategic partnership that would strengthen defense cooperation for decades.
Canada plans to acquire up to 12 submarines, with German shipbuilder TKMS competing against South Korea's Hanwha Ocean for the multibillion-euro contract.
Neither Ottawa nor TKMS has disclosed the exact value of the deal, but Canadian media reports estimate the program could reach €100 billion, including maintenance and operating costs over several decades.
The proposed purchase comes as NATO members accelerate defense spending and modernization efforts amid growing geopolitical tensions and increased focus on maritime security.
