Germany has decided to allow Turkiye earthquake victims who hold valid visas to stay with their relatives in Germany for another 3 months, according to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior, on Saturday.
The two ministries indicated that the victims who entered the country between February 6 and May 7, 2023, under the simplified visa regime will be exempted from the requirement to obtain a residence permit until August 6.
A devastating earthquake struck northern Syria and Turkiye in early February, killing 50,800 people in Turkey, according to Turkish government data.
It is noteworthy that the Turkish Doctors Union has now expressed strong scepticism about this number, and its estimates indicate that the number of these is much higher than the number announced by Ankara.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the German government agreed to implement a bureaucratic visa-free procedure for earthquake victims so that they could stay temporarily with their relatives in Germany.
