Germany has evacuated its embassy staff from Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, temporarily relocating them outside the country due to the escalating conflict involving Iran.

The German government confirmed that the evacuation was carried out with support from the United States. During a visit to Nicosia, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he had thanked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for assisting in the evacuation operation.

According to the German Federal Foreign Office, the decision was taken in response to the worsening security situation following the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran.

Germany had already relocated staff from its embassy in Tehran to a secure location outside Iran on Saturday after renewed strikes by the United States and Israel.

Officials said additional security measures have now been introduced to protect diplomatic personnel stationed in Baghdad.

The Foreign Office emphasized that the safety of its staff remains the government’s top priority and is being continuously assessed by the federal crisis response team.

Despite the evacuation, communication with the embassy in Baghdad remains operational. However, the legal and consular sections of the mission have been operating with extremely limited capacity for some time due to the tense security environment.

Wadephul also said he discussed the situation in the Middle East with Rubio during their phone call, stressing the need for an immediate end to Iranian attacks targeting countries in the region.

Both officials expressed concern that the prolonged conflict could threaten Israel’s security as well as the stability of regional partners and have broader economic consequences if the war continues.
