The German Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases added Canary Islands to its list of risk regions, due to the high rate of new coronavirus infections in the Spanish region, according to Reuters.

Moreover, RKI said that the whole of Spain, mainland and islands, was a risk region.

The institute’s update is usually followed by a travel warning to the designated regions by the Foreign Ministry.

It is worth mentioning that, last week, Spain recorded more than 53,000 new COVID-19 cases.

Adjusted for population, that figure means the virus is spreading there faster than in the US and at more than twice the rate of neighboring France.
