Germany is preparing for a potential role in securing the Strait of Hormuz, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirming that naval units will be deployed to the Mediterranean as an initial step.

Speaking to the German newspaper Rheinische Post, Pistorius said the deployment would include a mine countermeasure vessel and a command and supply ship, although no precise timeline has been disclosed.

The move comes amid heightened tensions following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz after the outbreak of war on 28 February. The disruption has severely impacted global shipping and trade flows, triggering sharp increases in energy prices and raising concerns over fuel shortages worldwide.

Reopening the vital maritime corridor remains a central issue in ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, with the waterway accounting for a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Pistorius stressed that any future German deployment to the region would depend on key conditions, including a sustained ceasefire, a clear legal framework under international law, and formal approval from the German parliament, the Bundestag.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also reiterated Berlin’s readiness to join an international mission to secure the strait, signaling a preference for US participation in any coordinated effort.
