The German government is set to discuss the deployment of police forces to the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, as part of efforts to enhance border monitoring.
The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday will focus on establishing the necessary conditions for the mission, according to government sources cited by DPA News Agency.
The German Interior and Foreign Ministries have drafted a joint proposal outlining the scope of the mission, with a key concern being the safety and protection of deployed officers.
The Rafah crossing, the only gateway to Gaza not controlled by Israel, was reopened on February 1.
Reports from late January indicated that the German government was preparing to send border management experts to assist at the crossing.
However, the existing 2005 ministerial directive, which only permitted the deployment of unarmed personnel, may need modification to facilitate the mission.
