German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for an immediate ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, stressing that any halt to the fighting must fully protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Speaking on the prospects of ending the conflict, Merz said a ceasefire can only be meaningful if it prevents renewed aggression and guarantees Ukraine’s right to self-determination. He emphasized that freezing hostilities without firm safeguards would risk prolonging instability rather than delivering lasting peace.
The German leader underlined that security guarantees are essential to ensure that any truce holds. He said these guarantees must be supported by international partners, including European allies and the United States, to provide Ukraine with long-term protection and deterrence against future attacks.
Merz acknowledged that current conditions for negotiations remain difficult, citing ongoing fighting and the absence of credible commitments from Moscow. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed Berlin’s position that diplomacy remains the only viable path to ending the conflict, provided it is grounded in international law and respect for national sovereignty.
Germany, he said, remains committed to supporting Ukraine politically, economically, and militarily while continuing to work with its partners on diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a durable settlement. Any peace arrangement, Merz added, must clearly reject territorial changes imposed by force.
As international efforts continue, Berlin’s stance highlights a broader European position: a ceasefire is only acceptable if it protects Ukraine’s sovereignty and lays the foundation for long-term regional stability.
