Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office has ordered the arrest of two people in Munich on suspicion of "scientific espionage" for China.
According to Germany's highest prosecutor, the couple, both German citizens, are believed to have contacted several scientists at German universities and research institutions on behalf of a Chinese intelligence agency.
The Federal Prosecutor's Office, based in Karlsruhe, stated that the arrests were carried out in several German states.
The Federal Prosecutor's Office alleged that the couple's aim in contacting these individuals was to obtain "scientific information related to advanced technology that could be used in the military field."
The Federal Prosecutor's Office clarified that the arrests targeted individuals classified as witnesses in the case, not suspects in the crime. The homes and workplaces of the arrested couple in Munich were also searched.
