German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to wage war against Iran, arguing that the conflict violates international law and warning of a major rift in transatlantic relations that could resemble the break between Germany and Russia.
Steinmeier’s role in German politics is largely ceremonial, but his sharp criticism of the war and Trump is likely to increase pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has stopped short of declaring the war illegal, as some European leaders have done, despite his growing criticism of the lack of a clear exit strategy from the war by the US and Israel, according to Politico Europe.
“This war violates international law,” Steinmeier said, adding that the justification for an imminent attack on the US “does not stand up to scrutiny.”
