German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas due to her tight schedule as well as the strict restrictions of coronavirus pandemic, the German government stated on Wednesday.
German government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer stated that Merkel holds meetings in a very limited manner due to the difficult circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic, adding that the chancellor's meeting with Abbas, during his presence in Germany, was not planned for this reason, in addition to her busy schedule.
Moreover, Demmer affirmed that Merkel and Abbas maintain regular contact, noting that their last video chat took place on November 23.
In the same vein, Demmer said Merkel called for a short nationwide lockdown to help stem rising coronavirus figures.
"Every call for a short, uniform lockdown is right," the spokeswoman asserted. "Also, a common nationwide approach would be important here."
Also, she told reporters that Germany was seeing a growing number of intensive care patients.
On the other hand, Abbas has already finished his pre-planned medical tests in Germany, and is scheduled to return to Palestine on Thursday, WAFA news agency said, confirming that he was feeling well.
