Major General Wolf-Jürgen Stahl, President of the Federal Academy for Security Policy, has issued a stark warning regarding Russia’s intensifying military activities. According to the General, President Vladimir Putin is systematically expanding military capabilities along the borders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), creating a infrastructure that could facilitate a direct assault.
In an interview with the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, Stahl detailed how the Kremlin is not only increasing troop numbers but also restructuring its armed forces. This expansion includes the construction of new military bases and barracks strategically positioned near NATO territories.
"Putin is expanding his armed forces, restructuring them, and building new bases along the NATO border," General Stahl stated. "In other words, he is establishing the capabilities for a military attack. I assume that under certain circumstances, he may have the will to use these capabilities."
Despite the concerning buildup, Stahl emphasized that a full-scale overt aggression against the alliance can still be prevented through a "strong and effective deterrent." He noted that while a direct kinetic war remains a possibility if the alliance appears weak, the current conflict is already manifesting in other forms.
The General described Russia’s current actions against Germany as a "hybrid war." This modern form of conflict involves sophisticated cyberattacks targeting government institutions, private corporations, and vital defense industries. Stahl pointed out that these operations are designed to destabilize society and infrastructure while maintaining a level of plausible deniability, as identifying the exact source of such attacks remains a complex challenge.
The warning comes at a time of heightened tensions across Europe, as NATO members continue to evaluate their defense postures in response to Moscow's shifting military strategy.
