GERD Unilateral Filling Poses Real Threat to Sudan, Says FM

The Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi said that the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian  Renaissance Dam (GERD) without a legal agreement is a real threat to Sudan.

This came during her meeting on Friday with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo Addo, during her visit to the capital, Accra, as part of her second African tour to explain Sudan's position on the development of the controversial dam.

Al-Mahdi affirmed her country's position in finding a peaceful solution to the dispute over the dam and borders with neighboring Ethiopia, adding that "Sudan is keen on the stability of the region and its reference is to international law and common treaties."

She indicated that Sudan adopts African solutions to the problems on the African continent with a greater role for the international community, stressing that "the second filling of the dam without a legal agreement represents a real threat to Sudan."

On his part, Akufo Addo said that he appreciates the bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed ways to enhance them.

Regarding the dam crisis, the Ghanaian president stressed the need to lay clear foundations for solving rivers issues in Africa as an entry point for cooperation, stressing that he rejects "unilateral actions that would  harm the whole continent."
