An Israeli airstrike on the Mawasi area of Khan Younis, southern Gaza, claimed the lives of Gaza’s Police Chief, Major General Mahmoud Salah, and his deputy, Major General Hossam Shahwan, early Thursday.
The attack, part of ongoing hostilities, resulted in the deaths of nearly 40 people, including civilians, and left many more injured.
The Gaza Ministry of Interior condemned the targeted killing as a "heinous crime," accusing Israel of sowing chaos and worsening the humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory.
The ministry emphasized that Salah and Shahwan were performing their national and humanitarian duties, serving the Palestinian people amid catastrophic conditions caused by the conflict.
Major General Salah had been a key figure in Gaza's police force since its establishment 30 years ago, dedicating his career to maintaining security in the region.
The airstrike also struck residential areas in Mawasi Khan Younis, killing and injuring numerous civilians.
Local reports indicated that many victims were asleep when the attack occurred. Among the dead were four children and three women, highlighting the growing toll on non-combatants in the ongoing violence.
