UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash stated Thursday that Arab states boycotting Qatar could resume travel and trade links with Doha within a week under a U.S.-backed deal.
Gargash told a virtual news conference that the measures to be implemented within a week of the agreement "include practical measures of airlines, shipping and trade."
Nonetheless, Gargash affirmed that other issues such as restoring full diplomatic relations would take time given geopolitical issues such as Iran, Turkey and political Islamist groups regarded by traditional Arab autocrats as an existential threat.
“Some issues are easier to fix and some others will take a longer time,”Gargash asserted. “We have a very good start ... but we have issues with rebuilding trust.”
“The UAE is determined to implement Al-Ula agreement,” the UAE Minister said, stressing the need to strengthen relations with the Gulf and Arab countries.
“We have a common fate with the Gulf countries,” the UAE Minister added, adding that “They share the same red lines.”
“We have surpassed the most important step,” the UAE Minister asserted. “There is regional and global relief to end the crisis, which concerned every party.”
“We are opening a new page, and we do not want to fall into big crises like what happened 2017 or small ones such as those in 2014,” he continued.
On the other hand, he stated that relations with Saudi Arabia and Egypt are of great importance to his country.
He also hailed the Egyptian role in the Gulf summit, hosted by the Saudi province of Al-Ula, affirming that Egypt is the prime country.
“Egypt was part of the crisis, and the signing of the statement of Arab solidarity. Egypt’s commitment to it confirms that there is a real desire from Qatar and the four countries, to reach an end to the crisis, which undoubtedly was cruel,” he noted.
