Gabon's President Ali Bongo Ondimba announced on Sunday that he will run for a third term in the presidential elections scheduled on August 26.
"I am officially announcing today that I am a candidate" for the presidential election, he told a crowd of supporters in a speech broadcast live on his Facebook page at the Nkok Special Economic Zone (ZES), near the capital Libreville.
Bongo, 64, has been in power for almost 14 years since succeeding his father, Omar Bongo, who died in 2009 after a term that began in 1967. There are no constitutional limits on presidential terms in Gabon.
Bongo's victory in the 2016 elections led to deadly clashes between police and demonstrators, during which the parliament building was burned.
