Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit on Tuesday, where the two sides reviewed progress in Egypt-European Union relations and exchanged views on key regional developments.
According to the Egyptian presidency, Sisi praised the momentum in ties between Egypt and the European Union since the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024.
The president reiterated Egypt's commitment to strengthening cooperation with the EU and exploring new and innovative areas of partnership. He highlighted ongoing efforts to implement the outcomes of the Egypt-EU Investment Conference held in 2024, as well as an economic event organized alongside the Egypt-EU Summit in October 2025.
Sisi also reviewed Egypt's economic reform program, including structural measures aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of the economy and improving the investment climate, expressing hope that these efforts would encourage greater European investment in the country.
For her part, von der Leyen welcomed the positive trajectory of cooperation between Egypt and the EU across multiple sectors. She praised Egypt's economic reform efforts as well as its role in combating terrorism and irregular migration, particularly in light of the economic and humanitarian pressures resulting from conflicts in the region.
The European Commission president reaffirmed the EU's commitment to working closely with Egypt to address common challenges, promote peace and strengthen cooperation across the Mediterranean.
The meeting also focused on regional issues of mutual concern. Sisi reiterated Egypt's position that sustainable political solutions are essential to resolving regional crises while preserving state sovereignty and protecting the interests of peoples across the region.
He expressed support for diplomatic efforts that led to the recent agreement between the United States and Iran, saying such initiatives could help prevent further military escalation and contribute to the security of Gulf countries and the protection of international navigation routes.
Sisi also stressed Egypt's commitment to working with the European Union to implement efforts aimed at ending the war in Gaza, while reaffirming Cairo's support for Lebanon's stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The president further reviewed Egypt's efforts to help resolve the conflict in Sudan and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Von der Leyen praised Egypt's approach to regional crises and highlighted what she described as a growing convergence between Egyptian and European positions on major regional issues, saying such alignment could contribute to resolving ongoing conflicts.
The meeting came as Egypt participated in the G7 Summit at the invitation of France, reflecting Cairo's growing diplomatic role in regional and international affairs.
