French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock toured the infamous Sednaya Prison near Damascus on Friday, a site internationally recognized as a symbol of repression under the rule of Bashar al-Assad.
The visit, observed by journalists from Agence France-Presse (AFP), marks a significant diplomatic step as it is the first high-profile Western delegation to Syria since the fall of Assad's regime on December 8.
The two ministers arrived in Damascus to meet with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the head of the newly formed Syrian transitional administration.
Their visit underscores the evolving international engagement with Syria following years of isolation due to the Assad regime's alleged human rights abuses and authoritarian policies.
Sednaya Prison, infamous for its brutal conditions and reports of severe human rights violations, stands as a stark reminder of the systemic repression that characterized Assad’s rule.
The prison has been the subject of numerous reports by international organizations documenting the atrocities committed there.
