French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized the urgent need to halt hostilities in the Middle East.
Moreover, he stated that this cessation is essential to fulfill commitments, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and initiate negotiations for a strict framework on the Iranian nuclear program within the 60-day window agreed upon by Washington and Tehran.
In statements made on Thursday, Barrot noted that Iran breached the agreement reached with the United States and violated international law by targeting vessels navigating Omani waters—outside of Iranian maritime territory—which subsequently triggered a cycle of retaliatory actions. He also called for calm and the resumption of talks.
Furthermore, French FM added that these types of maneuvers must cease entirely so that these crucial negotiations can proceed under the best possible conditions.
Responding to U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks that he no longer wishes to speak with the Iranians, Barrot pointed out that this is not the first time the American president has made such statements.
He also noted that during the NATO summit in Turkey yesterday, President Trump expressed, in one way or another, his intention for talks to continue, which Barrot described as a matter of paramount importance.
