French Elections: Macron in Marseille, Le Pen Defends Radicalism (Report)

Sat 16 Apr 2022 | 03:23 PM

French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron participated in a large rally on Saturday in Marseille, the second-largest city in France, in an attempt to persuade voters who voted for the left to join him in the second round of the presidential elections against his far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

Marseille was not chosen at random. The large Mediterranean city voted 31% for the leader of the radical left, Jean-Luc Melenchon, during the first round of elections on April 10.

The Melenchon voters, who came in third place with about 22% of the vote, are crucial for the candidates for the second round of the elections to be held next Sunday, who have been trying for days to make pledges to these voters.

Since the results of the first round of presidential elections were announced, the outgoing president (Macron), who has consistently presented himself as “neither from the right nor from the left” but has been accused of being a “president of the rich”,has doubled down on his initiatives towards the left and “social” currents.

In the meantime, dozens of demonstrations were organized in France, especially in Paris, at the invitation of many organizations and unions, to express their rejection and say "No" to the extreme right one week before the crucial polling date.

It seems that the campaign for the second round of the elections will be more difficult for Le Pen, who has to delve into the details of her project, especially with regard to sovereign issues.

During a surprise visit to a market in Bertwey (south) on Friday, Le Pen was harassed by her opponents, who shouted “Marin, leave!” and “racist!”

When asked by residents about immigration, the war in Ukraine, or even about the headscarf she intends to ban in public, Le Pen defended her "radical" project, saying it was "very reasonable."

In a press statement, Le Pen said that France’s gas bills would multiply several times if the United States stopped importing Russian gas into the European Union.

She added: “The Americans, who would sell us liquefied gas and get a big profit from it, could have transferred money to France as compensation for the losses from sanctions against Russia.”

Earlier, Le Pen commented on refraining from importing Russian hydrocarbons, describing this move as “a policy of suicide for the whole of Europe.”

Both Macron and Le Pen are also preparing for an inter-sessional debate scheduled for next Wednesday. This confrontation is very symbolic in the history of the French presidential elections since 1974.
