France has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms and hail as cooler weather moves in, bringing an end to a record-breaking heatwave that contributed to several deaths across Western Europe.
Temperatures remained above 33°C in Paris on Saturday, while many other parts of France recorded highs exceeding 30°C. The country recently registered its hottest May temperature on record, with 37.8°C recorded in the Charente region.
France’s weather agency said a cooler air mass arriving overnight would lower temperatures but could trigger powerful localized storms across northern France, accompanied by hail and wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h.
The heatwave also affected the UK and Portugal, both of which recorded their highest-ever May temperatures. In France, extreme heat disrupted rail services and caused power outages in some areas.
Meteorologist Matthieu Sorel said it is "highly likely" that France will experience further intense heatwaves later this summer.
