In a major diplomatic push to secure global energy supply lines, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot conducted high-level phone consultations today with key Gulf counterparts to address maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
The French foreign minister held extensive discussions with UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.
Implementing the Washington-Tehran Accord
According to diplomatic sources, the urgent talks centered heavily on the practical execution of the critical June 14 agreement brokered between Washington and Tehran. Ensuring absolute freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz—a vital transit chokepoint responsible for the passage of a significant portion of the world's petroleum—topped the diplomatic agenda.
A New Trilateral Maritime Framework
This intense round of French-led diplomacy follows a significant breakthrough on Friday. In a joint statement issued by Paris and London, France and the United Kingdom officially announced that the Sultanate of Oman has agreed to establish a cooperative framework with both European powers.
Under this new security arrangement, Oman will work closely with French and British naval and maritime authorities to safeguard navigation and guarantee maritime stability within its sovereign territorial waters.
