France is preparing to deploy an amphibious helicopter carrier to the Mediterranean as the conflict involving Iran intensifies, officials said Friday.
The move will reinforce French military assets already deployed in the region, according to the French Armed Forces General Staff.
A military spokesperson explained that the helicopter carrier will support French forces amid the ongoing Middle East crisis. The announcement confirmed earlier reporting by Le Marin.
The helicopter carrier Tonnerre departed its home port in Toulon on Friday accompanied by a frigate.
Another French helicopter carrier is already operating in the Middle East on a separate mission.
With the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle expected to arrive in the region over the weekend, three of France’s largest warships will soon be positioned near the conflict zone.
In 2024, France deployed a helicopter carrier off the coast of Lebanon as a precaution in case French citizens needed to be evacuated during clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
