French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told local media that more than 1,000 police and firefighters were injured in protests and riots across France.
France witnessed strikes and protests after President Emmanuel Macron and the government pushed for plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.
Darmanin told the French newspaper, Journal du Dimanche, that 1,093 police and firefighters have been injured since the protests erupted in March.
He told the weekly paper that there were also 2,579 incidents of arson and 316 attacks on public buildings.
The French Minister of the Interior did not provide figures on the injured protesters but said that investigations were underway with 36 police officers, on suspicion of using excessive force.
Darmanin rejected accusations that the police were aggressive against protesters and used disproportionate force.
He said that the right to demonstrate does not include the right to use violence.
