French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced his country’s full support for Egypt’s candidate, Dr. Khaled El-Anany, in the race for the position of UNESCO Director-General for the 2025–2029 term. In an official statement on Tuesday, France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Barrot’s endorsement, following a meeting with El-Anany on November 8, where the French minister conveyed France’s commitment to his candidacy for the upcoming election scheduled for November 2025.

Minister Barrot emphasized France’s dedication to UNESCO’s core values, including education, science, cultural preservation, and multilateral cooperation. He noted that France remains a strong advocate of UNESCO’s mission to promote peace, tolerance, and cross-cultural understanding—principles he believes are well-aligned with El-Anany’s vision and qualifications.

Dr. Khaled El-Anany, a distinguished Egyptian academic and former Minister of Antiquities, is highly respected for his contributions to Egypt’s cultural and heritage sectors. Known for his expertise in archaeology and historical preservation, El-Anany has overseen numerous restoration projects and international partnerships on iconic Egyptian monuments, promoting cultural diplomacy and cooperation on a global scale. His experience and vision have positioned him as a strong candidate for the UNESCO role, particularly at a time when cultural heritage and educational initiatives are facing growing global challenges.

France’s endorsement underscores the longstanding partnership between France and Egypt, particularly in cultural preservation and heritage initiatives. Over the years, France has actively collaborated with Egypt on restoration projects for key historical sites, emphasizing a shared commitment to cultural heritage that now extends to UNESCO’s leadership.

As UNESCO faces challenges like digital education, heritage protection in conflict areas, and promoting sustainable scientific advancements, member states are keenly focused on leadership that can navigate these evolving priorities. France’s support for El-Anany’s candidacy reaffirms its dedication to UNESCO’s multilateral mission and highlights the value of Franco-Egyptian cooperation in advancing global cultural and educational goals.
