French President Emmanuel Macron admitted France's responsibility for the Rwandan genocide. His admission came during his visit to Kigali, Rwanda on Thursday.

He said: "Standing here today, with humility and respect, by your side, I have come to recognize our responsibilities."

The French president described in his speech at the Kigali Genocide Memorial where more than 250,000 Rwandan Tutsi were buried "Suffering it inflicted on the Rwandan people by too long valuing silence over the examination of the truth."

Next, Macron asked for the Rwandan people's forgiveness over the 1994 mascare.

On the other hand, Rwandan President Paul Kagame said: "His words were something more valuable than an apology. They were the truth."

"France and Rwanda are going to relate much better to the benefit of both our peoples, economically, politically and in terms of culture," he added.

Macron's visit to Rwanda is the first presidential visit of the French President to the state since 2010.
