Four people were injured after unidentified gunmen carried out coordinated attacks on around 11 fuel stations in Thailand’s far south, the Thai army said on Sunday.
In a statement, the military said several bombs exploded over a 40-minute period, damaging fuel pumps at stations in the provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala.
Southern army commander Narathip Puenok told reporters that security measures have been raised to the highest level across the region, including at road and border checkpoints, to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible.
Thailand’s deep south has long been affected by a separatist insurgency in the Muslim-majority provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, driven by historical, cultural, and ethnic grievances, with rebel groups seeking independence or greater autonomy.
