Former Zambian President Rupiah Banda Passes away

The Former Zambian President, Rupiah Banda, died at the age of 85 on Friday, Reuters reported.

Banda died at his home after a battle with cancer, family and presidency announced.

He was the fourth in the history of the country, and he held power from 2008 to 2011. He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

The son of the late president told Reuters: "He died around 1900 hours today."

Furthermore, President Hakainde Hichilema announced in a televised statement: "We recognize with fondness his long and illustrious career in public service, and we appreciate his service to the nation," Hichilema said.

Therefore, all homes and entertaining spots in his city were in a mournful and mourning mood as a sign of respect and sadness for Banda’s death.

It is worthy to mention that he started his career in the presidency by holding the responsibilities of the Vice President for President Levy Mwanawasa in 2006.

Two years later, he won the presidential election in 2008.
