Former British Prime Minister Theresa May announced that she will not run for Parliament in the upcoming general elections, ending her 27-year career in Parliament.

In a statement to a local newspaper in her Maidenhead constituency, reported by the Independent newspaper, May admitted that it was a difficult decision to step down from politics. She said she made the decision to focus on issues close to her heart, including her work on the Global Commission Against Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

May went on to say that it has been an honor and privilege to serve everyone in the Maidenhead constituency as a Member of Parliament over the past 27 years. She added: Being a Member of Parliament is about serving constituents and I have always done my best to ensure that I meet the needs of local people and the local area.

May was first elected as a member of parliament in 1997, and became the second woman to become prime minister in Britain from July 2016 until July 2019.

May was famous for her tough stance on immigration and law and order during her period as Home Secretary under David Cameron between 2010 and 2016 before succeeding him as Prime Minister.

In early elections held in 2017, it lost its parliamentary majority, but it clung to power after forming an alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party.

May stepped down as prime minister on July 24, 2019, after Boris Johnson won the Democratic leadership race and succeeded
