In an audio message, the former leader of Ethiopia's Tigray region Debretsion Gebremichael vowed "extended resistance", accusing federal government forces and their allies of rape and looting.

These are the first public remarks by Gebramikiel since November 11, although he was in contact with journalists until the first week of December, according to Reuters.

The audio was posted on the Facebook page of a media outlet linked to the former ruling party- the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) - which has been fighting the government since November 4.

The recording stated that the federal government "has temporary military dominance," referring to human rights violations such as rape and looting, reports of which have also been highlighted by the United Nations (UN).

"We are engaged in an extended resistance," Gebremichael confirmed.
